PSYCHOLOGISTS ON LIBERALISM
I have read a myriad of papers from psychologists on the subject of politics and the liberal versus the conservative mind. In my research, I found that for every paper on the liberal mind there were five hundred on the conservative mind. In addition, not only was any paper that had as a subject matter something to do with the conservative mind negative but the authors also could not help but move quickly from a scientific discourse to emotional catharsis. Their passion of liberalism has made them violate real scienceâthey are nothing but demagogues. For instance, a group of four psychologists (it turns out only two were members of psychology departments; the other two were from political science and business school departments) from Berkeley (two), Stanford, and Maryland compared Ronald Reagan to Hitler. They also determined conservatives were motivated by fear and aggression and were dogmatic and intolerant, simple minded, and fearful. Many make statements to the effect that âconservativesâ just have a lower IQ. These âpsychologistsâ are certainly not scientists because they cannot rise above their emotions to discuss the issue objectively. I file their âworkâ in the circular file; their work is not interesting because it is not science, it is boring demagoguery.
Why so much attention to bashing the conservative mind and so little to actually studying the liberal and conservative mind from a scientific perspective? The answer to that question came during a talk a psychologist by the name of John Haidt (from the University of Virginia, my alma mater) gave at a meeting of the Society for Personality and Social Psychology (one of the largest conferences for psychologists). Haidt asked the participants in the audience to raise their hands if they considered themselves to be liberals. Of the several hundred attendees, it appeared to me that over 90 percent of them raised their hands. Then he asked for all those who considered themselves conservatives to raise their hand; the total count was 8 to 10. This explains why there is a dearth of research on the subject but also sheds light on the entire profession of psychology. Why is most of the field made up of âliberalâ-minded people? Why are media, entertainment, journalism, fashion, psychology, and education industries chock-full of âliberalâ minds? They seem to attract each other and are drawn to these fields. Clearly the answer is that something about all these endeavors draws the same type of liberal mind and is a place where few conservative minds care to spend much time.
The liberal philosophy that has led to the massive social spending is nothing more than a psychological condition of the liberal mind shared by a large number of people. This is the primary cause of the United States entering the Debt Trap. But what exactly is this psychological condition?
